Fairbury Jeffersons 1923

 

Fairbury went from first to worst in 1923. They came off a thrilling playoff victory over Norfolk in 1922 but could not work the magic in 1923. George Segrist was manager in both 1922 and 1923.

Roster:

First base for the Jeffs was handled by Jimmy Hudgens He led the regulars with a .321 average. He was sold to the Cardinals at the end of the season. He played in the minor leagues through the 1931 season.

Joe Goodwin returned to Fairbury for the 1923 and was a regular at second for the 1923 year. In 101 games he averaged .249.

At Short stop in 1923 was Orris Lee for 65 games played in a total of 95 games and averaged .283; and Spot Grant played short for 19 games and in 33 games total. He averaged .323. . Lee and Grant, well Ok a suitable civil war reference should be made here.

Hal Makin was at third for 79 games. He averaged .267.

Mee handled the hot corner for 74 games. He averaged .294. He was sold to Fort Smith at the end of the year.

The catcher for 1923 was Beall. He was behind the mask for 92 games, played in 123 games and averaged .308.

Outfield;

George Bliss 72 games.

Nolt played in 43 games and averaged .335.

Leon Alter 61 games .206

Pitchers:

Mike Harkins was 15-12 for the season and had 128 k's.

Glenn Hostetter 10-8

Vern Willey led the team with 150 strike outs and had a 14-14 record.

Leon Alter was 9-12 for the Jeffersons in 1923. He also played in various outfield and infield positions. At the end of the year he was given a tryout in St. Louis with the Cardinals.
