Grand Island A's 1957

Grand Island was a rookie farm club of the Kansas City Athletics in 1957. Art Mazmanian was in his second year as manager and the team went on to win the pennant in 1957.

The team drew nearly 30,000 fans in 1957.

Roster:
Tom Wilcox averaged .272 as the regular at first in 1957.

Robert Jacobson played 10 games at first and in 44 overall in 1957. He averaged .210 for the year.

Lou Klimchock was signed by the Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1957. The 17 year old from Hostetter Pennsylvania played 39 games at second base for the A's. He averaged .273 for the season and had 21 stolen bases. In 1958 he played for Pocatella in the Pioneer League and led the league with a .398 average. He also led the Pioneer league in runs and hits. He was promoted to the major leagues at the end of the season and made his his major league debut in September with the A's. He played for 12 seasons with five different teams. He is the current president of the Arizona Chapter of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.

Robert Gubicza played in 19 games at second base and 16 at short. He averaged .218 for the season.

James Balkwill was the regular at the hot corner in 1957 and averaged .310.

Bolivar Hinojoza played 48 games at short and averaged .251.

Tony DeGennaro put on the mask 52 times in 1957 and led the team with a .322 average. John Moore played the catcher position in 10 games and averaged .188.

Outfield:
Fred Knapp was a regular in the garden. He averaged .253.

Leonard Mohlman averaged .297 in 45 games.

Roger Aceto average .291 in 39 games and Ray Barboza averaged .202. Dwaine West played in 11 games and averaged .050, while Robert Jacobson averaged .210 in 44 games. Pitchers:
George Belden was one of the top ranked pitchers in the league for 1957. He had a 7-2 record in 14 games.

Robert Kucher was on the mound for 15 games and had a 10-3 record.

Tom Dembia was 3-3 in 11 games and Robert Golick was 4-2 in 13 appearances.

Jerry Mercer was 3-3 in 14 games, Ervin Moore appeared in 10 games and was 1-3 and Jerry Sublett was 1-2 in 7 games.
