Hastings Third Cities 1913

Hastings arranged to play their Sunday games in Blue Hill. Blue Hill built a grandstand for their ball park that would hold at least 500 fans. Hastings and Blue Hill split admissions with the Hastings club receiving 25 cents from each admission and Blue Hill 10 cents. Hastings averaged over 1,000 fans per game at Blue Hill for their Sunday double headers.

Bert Shaner guided Hastings as manager during 1913. This was his third year in Hastings and his second as manager. He played for Wichita in the Western League in 1910 before coming to Hastings in 1911.

Jake Gettman was sold to Indianapolis for $500.00. He had been purchased from Baltimore by Hastings and there was considerable consternation over the financials. In addition, Carney, the Hastings catcher was sold back to Lincoln where he caught 59 games for Lincoln in 1913.

Roster:

Cap Bennet wound up in Hastings for the latter part of the season. He averaged .346 in 102 games.

Leo Richardson was a catcher in 45 games and averaged .231. He also played for Port Huron in 19 games in 1913. He started with Junction City in the Central Kansas League in 1911 and played for Mason City after his time in the NSL.

Bechtold tended the garden and averaged .336.

Brown (yes yet another Brown) averaged .339 in 108 games.

Tacke averaged .338 in 112 games.

Wisser played in the infield and averaged .262.

Pitchers:

Frank Riley was 15-13 in 29 games.

Tuckey was 7-0.

McCoy was 2-2 in 4 games.

Bert Shaner was 3-3.
