Norfolk Elks 1934

Joe McDermott returned for his fourth year as Norfolk manager. He went to Omaha to manage in the Western League in 1936, then he was back in Norfolk for 1936.

Only two teams had a winning record in 1934. Norfok was one of them and wound up in 2nd place with 60 wins and 49 losses

Roster:
Forest Buck Ewing led league with a .360 batting average. The left fielder was optioned to the Cardinals at the end of the season then sent to Houston. He was eventually assigned to Greenwood then Springfield where he batted .294 in the class "C" Western Association.

George Silvey led league with 143 hits. A regular at first he was also picked up by St. Louis and sent to Houston. He played for Huntington in 1935.

Ray Bertram averaged .301 while playing in 78 games in the infield. He was one of five Norfolk players named to the All Star Team.

Bennie Warren was an all star catcher, averaging .300 in 87 games. The 22 year old from Elk City Oklahoma also played for Lincoln during the year. He made it to the big leagues in 1939, playing in 18 games for Philadelphia.

Kenneth Edwards averaged .274 in 101 games.

Russell Knudsen averaged .228 in 82 games.

John Drost played in 111 games and averaged .274.

Michael Semanisin played in 113 games and the 22 year old averaged .247.

Laverne Staples played in 85 games and averaged .225.

Pitchers:
Jack Farmer led league with 19 wins. He was named to the All Star Team. The 21 year old from London Kentucky made 32 appearances. He managed a 19-6 record. He played for Huntington in 1935 and 1936, Portsmouth in 1937 and Fostoria in 1939. His last playing year was 1946 with Easton and he ended his managing career in 1950 with Grand Forks in the Northern League.

Alva Pearson was 12-5 in 27 games.

Kenneth Cabble Managed a 14-9 record in 26 games.

Franklin Wagner was 8-7 in 18 games.

Jones was 3-3 in 11 games.

Art Neely was 2-6 in 12 games.

Frenchmore was 0-1, Jacobsen was 1-1, Jahn was 0-1, Jones was 3-3, Miner was 1-1, Jurinek was 1-1, Morgan was 0-2, Arthur Pregel was 0-2, Peterson was 1-3 and Roberts was 1-6. Nebraska State League 1934
