Hastings Reds 1914

 

Expectations were high for Hastings in 1914. The hot stove season was a buzz with the expectation of a great year for Dazzy Vance and the rest of the crew. They started the year with a series of victories and maintained their first place standing through May and June. It was in the second week in July that they began to fall. They were eventually passed by Beatrice and league champion Grand Island.

Roster:

Jacob John Gettman finished his long tenure in professional baseball in 1914. He averaged .336 in 109 games while tending the garden and playing first base for the Reds. Gettman was originally from Frank Russia. He started his professional career in 1897 with Ft. Worth in the Texas League. By the end of the year he was with Washington in the American League. He played for Washington in 1898 and 1899. After a short stint in Kansas City he settled in the Eastern League where he played in Buffalo, Toronto, Newark and Baltimore through the 1911 season. He spent 1913 in Indianapolis before spending his last professional season in Hastings . He then moved to Denver.

Steve Matticks was a in the dirt at second base in 1914. He averaged .215 for the season.

The hot corner was handled by Ed Brown and averaged .252.

Ben Stoloff averaged .212 while playing 31 games in 1914.

Schroeder averaged .130.

Leo Richardson put on the tools of ignorance in 1914. He averaged .236.

Outfield:

L. Brown averaged .217 in 46 games.

Robert McCabe averaged .273 in 111 games. He played in the MINK league for Falls City from 1910-191.

Ray Crann averaged .221 in 104 games.

Roy Moore played in 42 games and averaged .277.

Pitchers:

Dazzy Vance led the NSL in strikeouts with 194 in 1914. He wwas 17-4 in 26 games. At the end of the year he was picked up by St. Joseph in the Western League where he went 9-8.

O. Vance was 4-0 in four games.

York was 3-2.

Lyle Purcell was 6-2 in 9 games.

Riley was 15-13 in 37 games.

Willey was 11-10 in 22 games. He had 140 K's for the year.

Bill Piercy was 5-7 in 16 games. He played in the American League with the Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs from 1921-1926.

Sherman was 3-5 in 12 games.

Frank Riley was 15-13 in 1914.
